Severine Bremond of France dreams of making the Wimbledon quarter-finals again, to repeat her astonishing run in 2006. Today she started on the long road with a first round victory in the qualifying tournament.

"Wimbledon is my favourite tournament and I am determined to play in the main draw again," said Bremond after her opening 6-4, 6-2 win over practice partner and friend Marie-Eve Pelletier of Canada.

Bremond's current ranking of 109th meant she was not far short of direct acceptance into Wimbledon. Instead she asked for a wild card into qualifying, where she started off as fourth seed, and believes she is on the way to the main draw.

"Of course I think about going to the quarter-finals again," said Bremond, who lives in Aix-en-Province. "Two years ago it was my time, my life. I know I can play well on grass and it's in my mind to have some good matches. Why can't I do it again?"

Bremond has played in 17 Grand Slam singles events — with Wimbledon easily her best. In 2006 she was beaten by eventual finalist Justine Henin of Belgium.

The 28-year-old took control quickly today against the 200th ranked Pelletier and broke serve in the sixth game. Bremond then missed five set points before winning through on the sixth when she hit a backhand cross court winner and forced an error from Pelletier.

Bremond was more comfortable in the second set and broke serve in the fourth and eighth games to clinch her victory.
